As for why the existence of contracts remains.... the entertainment of our host, perhaps. Of which we seem to be failing, based on their ire directed at dear Lepus.
.... it may be some attempt to help us, albeit roundabout. Perhaps to 'buy us time'... as these staff members might be more cooperative and empathetic to our needs than the those that existed before them.
