We'd already found the locked penthouse door. The hallway door Jason went in was already open when he went to grab something the shadows threw a floor down from there. At the end of that, there was a portal that led him in. I don't think just walking into those doors at random will help.
Hmmm... well, like I said, they should be sending more letters, so perhaps they will explain further? I assume they probably didn't have time to send a more thorough explanation before the letters were mailed out so Dimitri just wrote something out quickly.
